For the enthusiasts of the Baroque and golden ornamentation, knowing this church is a real pleasure. Come and see one of the most extraordinary pieces of Montoro’s heritage.
Ntra. Sra. del Carmen Parish
Ntra. Sra. Del Carmen Parish is located in the heart of the historical centre of the town, specifically in Plaza del Charco. It is very well located if you go to Plaza de España, the heart of Montoro, as you will not have to deviate a lot from the route.
Plaza del Charco is embellished with orange trees that protect the church facade, giving it a picturesque touch, which is hardly unnoticed by you so you can photograph it. It is one of the places where most people from the village pass by, so you will be able to feel the cheer that comes from this place.
It is curious the origin of this church, it was an old Discalced Carmelite Convent in the 17th century. Afterwards, it became a Parish in 1891. You can’t miss it.
What is the most remarkable thing about this monument?
Its extraordinary golden main altar from the Baroque period – when you arrive at it, you will be able to see that it has recently been restored – it is what you will be most impressed by, as it is the first thing you distinguish when you come into its interior. There are also side altars of the same style.
You will not be able to take your eyes away from it without seeing the image that is predominated in the centre; it is the Stmo. Cristo de las Penas, known before as Cristo de la Salud, whose date is between 1736 and 1739. It is the oldest carving of Montoro that has been preserved to until the present day.
Just next to this front art work, if you go on the right, there is a special altarpiece in which you have to stop, as you will be dazzled by its two colours green and gold.
This range of shades combines perfectly with the image of Ntra. Sra. de la Soledad, which is the oldest female carving in Montoro. This carving has its penitential procession on the evening of the Good Friday.
On the other hand, if you look at the top, you will see a relic that will not be unnoticed by you if you are an enthusiastic of music: the organ. The Turriel brothers were the ones who were in charge of making it and building the organ of the cathedral of Cordoba too.
Finally, while you go for a walk across all the facilities of the building, you will be able to adorate the main images of the Stmo. Cristo de la Humildad and Ntra. Sra. de la Consolación and Esperanza Brotherhood; Santo Sepulcro and Ntra. Sra. de la Soledad Sacramental Brotherhood; Cristo de las Penas and Ntra. Sra. del Carmen Brotherhood. Additionally, the Ntra. Sra. del Rocío of Montoro Brotherhood has its headquarters here.
