Virgen de la Fuensanta Chapel
If you feel like breathing pure air and discovering the rural environment of Montoro, we recommend you to visit the Virgen de la Fuensanta Chapel. It is relatively close if you go by car and you will enjoy of a completely different day.
If you have decided to visit this small religious temple, you should know that it has a Baroque historical origin, however, it is not known the exact year of construction because there are documents that refer to the fifteenth century.
What does the chapel look like?
The building has three naves and a modest small chapel that keeps the most precious treasure of the Corcomé Valley. Inside the temple you will find numerous inscriptions and tombstones that make reference to different periods throughout history, history that this temple has lived.
Did you know…?
The legend says that the image of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta appeared to a shepherd from the neighbouring village of Marmolejo in the 15th century. Possibly, this miraculous fact was the one that motivated the construction of today’s chapel which we know as Fuensanta Chapel.
Fuensanta Virgin
The main image of this chapel is the co-patroness of Montoro and it parades on the last Sunday of April, it is a pilgrimage popularly known as Veleras.
Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta Botherhood carries out numerous events throughout the year in this chapel, such as are the Children’s Pilgrimage, the Elderly’s Pilgrimage and the mass on the 8th December.
It’s pilgrimage time!
The most important date that you have to be in mind is the Veleras Sunday, which begins with the departure of the Brotherhood towards the Corcomé valley together with horses, carts and crowds.
There is an obligatory stop along the way where pilgrims offer their traditional meatballs together with some good wine of this land.
The procession is accompanied by the traditional sound of the drums of the Brotherhood on its arrival of the Brotherhood to the Valley, finishing with a Holy Mass and having the rest of the day for the tasting of the typical cuisine of this area with family and friends.
Why is it called Veleras?
The Veleras name comes from the tradition of lighting with candles by the pilgrims, from their departure from Montoro at dawn until the arrival at the Fuensanta chapel, so it is a name that comes from the action of these people who carried the candles.
