Come and visit this excellent stone pillar topped with a shield belonging to the House of the Great Habsburg (16th century).

This fountain is located in the centre of the town of Montoro, next to the Guadalquivir River and Herrerías Street, so you will have no problem finding its location if you access from the old town.

If you look at the top of this wall, you will see the stone coat of arms of the Habsburg so, if we stop to look at its form, this fountain can be dated back to the 16th century.

Why was the pillar erected?

Many works of Montoro from the medieval and modern times used water as a basic element for the elaboration of their handmade products.

Considering this, you should know that one of the main manufacturing sectors in Montoro was the iron works to manufacture and work the iron, whose workshops were located in the surroundings of this fountain. All this was what caused that the Large Pillar was known as the Herrerías Pillar, a name that lasts until our days.

It is possible that you find all the fountain surroundings remodelled when you arrive there. This is due to the fact that the Herrerías Pillar suffered a severe collapse in the first months of 2015. For the first time, the containment of the land and the remodelling of the watering hole were made.

The process of remodelling the Herrerías Pillar has consisted of the creation of a new front wall with natural hydraulic lime and the endings with molinaza stone, reproducing the previous appearance of the pillar before the landslides.

On the other hand, the restoration of the coat of arms that dominated it has been restored and a copy of it has been placed there.
