Prison Arch

During your visit to the Town Hall, we recommend taking advantage of the opportunity to visit this neighbouring infrastructure to the Town Hall.

This construction is held between the Town Hall and the houses at Salazar Street and it has certain mystery about the layers that it consists of over time.

It is curious the testimonial inscription that you will be able to appreciate as soon as you stop to observe a little bit more: “Philipe Tercero deste nonbre Nuestro Señor mandó hazer esta carcel” in 1607. In fact, this arch corresponds to the existence of a prison in the same surroundings, which is inserted in the town hall nowadays.

This place is well known by all the people of Montoro, because it is also associated with other very significant moments related to the Holy Week, especially to the expectant to the apparition of the image of Jesus of Nazareth in front of the worshippers in the early morning of the Good Friday, which remains in San Juan de Letrán Church throughout the year.

The legend tells that…

A prisoner is released from prison under this arch every Good Friday morning, similar to the way in which is done in Málaga. This testimony was reflected in the Royal Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene and Mary of Sorrows Records in 1978.

That is the reason why the carving of Our Father Jesus has to be placed under the Arch at three o’clock in the morning – solar hour – sheltered by the sound of the bells of San Bartolomé.
