This unique construction describes a historical trajectory that will arise your curiosity from its origins. Come and discover it.

The Tercias Catedralicias building was built in 1784 to store olive oil, wine and wheat from the tithes’ payment.

Why was this building built?

It became necessary with the payment of the tax contribution called Tercia to build a building of singular architecture in Montoro where the olive oil was stored and accumulated to ensure the tribute to the Monarchy, the local Church and the Cathedral of Cordoba.

Why will las Tercias catch your attention?

For its historical particularity. This building was not always devoted to the storage of products from tithes. Furthermore, it was prohibited the collection of tithes taxes with the Mendizábal confiscation, and that is the reason why this facility lost its original function.

The Tercias Catedralicias are confiscated by the State by Espartero’s law in 1841. In 1845, the goods which had not been taken by individual people were returned to the clergy, therefore the ownership of the building was owned back by the church.

Las tercias have suffered a lot of changes from that period until present days (post-war prison, stables, tools store, carpentry), and the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Andalusia declared it as a building of social interest in 1987.

Current Olive Oil Museum

An olive oil museum was located in these facilities in 2007 – it has currently been remodelled-, a decision that directly connects with the function that this construction had in its origin.

This fact has led the Administration to register this traditional construction in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage.
