This is one of the reasons why Montoro is worth visiting. You will be surprised by the treasures you can find behind every corner. This is an example of this.
Postigo or Limpias Christ Altar
Postigo street is located just behind San Bartolomé Church, in Plaza de España. You can take advantage of your visit and see some emblematic places which surround this street which are only a few meters from this small corner.
It is an altar devoted to the Limpias Christ. This is crowned by a stone cross under which you can read: “1672 Year”.
Where can it have its origin?
According to the Historical Municipal Archive information, we can tell you about the existence of a written letter in 1781 by the religious Mr. Juan Antonio del Peral y Buenrostro to the council of the town applying for a corner of San Bartolomé Church to worship, it was placed in the door of his house and in the old postigo which was closed – that is the reason why this is the given name to this street. This information can be related to the monument.
What happened before the Civil War?
This altar had to be taken by another image of similar characteristics before the conflict, because the existing forged fence can be confirmed of being from the 19th century. Hence, this altar was erected to the Limpias Christ and since then, there are many people who come to see it in order to place some candles.
In addition to this, the Ancient Choir of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth performs in front of it every Good Friday in the Holly Week, who dedicate their primitive songs of old pre-Gregorian polyphonies to it.
